Description

In accordance with the 2020 Minnesota Residential Code, this course covers code administration for contractors; investigate specific and details of framing in accordance with the International Residential Code; window, siding and roofing installation including flashing details, and more.

Course Outline
  • Introduction
  • Part one discusses code administration for contractors. Topics to be included but not limited to:
    • Powers and Duties of the Building Official
    • Building Official Liability
    • Permits
    • Fees
    • Inspections
    • Board of Appeals
    • Stop Work Orders
  • Part two investigates specific and details of framing in accordance with the IRC. Topics to be included but not limited to:
    • Conventional and manufactured floor systems
    • Floor cantilevers
    • Roof trusses
    • Standard bracing details.
    • Engineered truss drawings
    • Point loads
    • Uplift application
    • Hangers and hardware
    • Narrow and tall wall applications
    • A basic beam sizing method for floors and roofs will be included using the provisions of the code as well as application for LVL beams
  • Part three covers:
    • Window installation including flashing details;
    • Siding installation including flashing details for
    • Vinyl siding
    • Steel siding
    • Wood siding
    • Cement board siding
    • Brick and adhered stone products
    • Stucco
  • Roofing installation including flashing details for
    • Asphalt

If you are unsuccessful, you will have an opportunity to repeat the quiz. Code Educational Opportunities


Greg is the owner of Code Educational Opportunities and has an extensive background in developing and presenting all types of building code and related courses. Most recently, he was a building official for the City of Winona, MN. As a staff Instructor with the International Code Council and as a building code representative with the State of Minnesota Codes and Standards Division, He has traveled locally, throughout the United States, and abroad providing training to contractors, building officials and inspectors, design professionals, and other individuals with a vested interest in the codes. Greg served as an adjunct faculty in the Building Inspection Technology program at Inver Hills Community College in MN. In previous career paths, he has worked in the lumber industry, truss industry, and as a general contractor. Greg holds certifications as an ICC and State of MN Certified Building Official, ICC Plans Examiner, ICC Building Inspector, and ICC Building Code Specialist. Greg holds a certificate of completion in the Building Inspection Technology program as well as background and education in the architectural drafting field.
